court records show their father had a history of domestic violence. nicole garcia joins us live with the details. >> reporter: kari, we may never know why the 36year-old murdered his own daughters and took his own life but court records reveal a violent breakup. he threatened his ex-wife trying to stop him from taking the girls and leaving him. the girls scheduled time when the accident happened. >> reporter: audrey just started kindergarten and her sister was excited to go to school one day, too. instead of planning their future, their mother is preparing their funerals. the girls were shot and killed by their father who turned the gun on himself. the parents recently divorced and just four months ago, the girls' mom was granted an order of protection.

claimed that jared held her in a chokehold while she was getting ready for work, took away her cellphone and work phone to keep her from calling police and threatened her saying "he can't live without us." >> orders of protection are just pieces of paper. if someone is intent on committing a final act, they will do it. cases protective orders are effective in keeping abusers away. >> that is our best hope in these situations. >> reporter: arizona is ranked eighth in the country for the highest number of women killed in domestic violence situations. the girls are among four dozen arizonans who are either shot or stabbed to death due to domestic

experts say domestic violence is an epidemic in this state and there needs to be more focus on treating the abusers. >> what is going on in the abusers' mind, many times they were abused and have seen violence in their lifetime and what is going on there. that is one way we can make a difference in domestic violence. >> reporter: according the the maricopa attorney's office, one-third of homicide victims who were murdered within the first month of getting the orders. when a person files a protection order, there is no law that requires the defendant to turn in their weapons voluntarily. reporting live, i'm nicole garcia, fox 10 news. an apartment fire in tempe leaves five people leaving for a place to sleep tonight.

county recorders office want to assure voters their vote is protected. some voters have lost faith in the system. they think voting is rigged. >> your votes don't count. they already want somebody in the office. we already know who is going to win this one. >> reporter: others say there is not enough regulation that leads to voter fraud. >> i don't think we do enough to safeguard our we don' put certain restrictions in the vote. >> reporter: the recorders office wants to assure the county that the votes are protected by almostic and accuracy tests on all machines to make sure everything is working properly. >> we check every signature on the early ballots to ensure you, in fact, voted this early ballot
